The municipality of Amsterdam joins the Low Emission Vehicle Programme

Amsterdam has become the first Dutch entity to join the Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) Programme. This initiative, launched in 2022, is extending the successful Electronics Watch impact model into the automotive sector. The programme already includes six Electronics Watch affiliates and three other public sector participants from Belgium, Germany, Norway, Spain and the UK.

The Electronics Watch Low Emission Vehicles Programme (LEVP) seeks to safeguard workers' rights and amplify their voices within the supply chains of batteries and electronics associated with low emission vehicles. It contributes to a just transition by supporting public authorities in the responsible procurement of low emission vehicles, and helps public buyers to play a key role in defending the rights of workers in clean energy supply chains.

Worker-driven monitoring for the LEVP focuses on cobalt, tin and nickel mines in DRC, Bolivia, Indonesia and the Philippines, as well as semiconductor factories in Taiwan, Malaysia and China, and battery manufacturing facilities in Hungary and Poland.

"In 2025 Amsterdam will take its supply chain responsibility even more seriously. Supply chain responsibility will become a theme in procurement policy Opdrachtgeven en inkopen met Invloed. This means that suppliers to Amsterdam of high-risk product groups must always make an effort to tackle social and environmental risks. Through the collaboration with Electronics Watch in the Low Emission Vehicle Programme, we are taking a first and crucial step toward a just transition," said Stefan Rigter, Sustainable Contracting and Procurement Advisor at the municipality of Amsterdam.

Public bodies who are interested in joining this transformative initiative are encouraged to reach out to Rocío Paniagua for more details.
