The 2021 Freedom of Association Summit

Participants from 30 different countries took part in the four day Freedom of Association summit organised by Electronics Watch in December 2021, with support from Advanced Procurement for Universities and Colleges, Scotland. More details and the recordings from each session can be accessed here.

With expert input from workers, public buyers, monitoring partners, and trade unions, we explored the meaning of Freedom of Association and why it poses a challenge in electronics supply chains, both in manufacturing and mining regions. We discussed the connection between Freedom of Association, the climate crisis, and modern slavery. We also looked at how to verify Freedom of Association in the public procurement process and how to remedy violations. Leading up to the summit two affiliate workshops studied best practices in verification and two workshops for monitoring partners examined monitoring of freedom of association and collective bargaining.

Participants could listen to the summit in English, French or Spanish, and could stay on for informal discussion with speakers and other participants after each session. Electronics Watch would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success. There is a long way to go, but putting this issue at the forefront of the debate will help get us there faster.
